Music Around the World

Opus11 Campbell

In this first week, we will discover musical Ideas and genres from around the world. We will travel continent to continent in order to discover the instrumentation and concepts of major genres in countries from North America, South America, Africa, Europe, and Asia. This week will focus on 2 or 3 composers, bands, or artists each day who will represent a genre that is culturally significant in each of our continents. Listen to many pieces with an emphasis on differentiating instruments and what defines each genre as well as the genre’s creation and purpose. Play, inspect, and test musical instruments that help bring these songs to our playlists with some of the many instruments available at Opus11 in order to better understand each of the songs and pieces we will be listening to. From American Jazz to Russian Romantic come and experience music around the world! 

Music and Nature

In this week of summer camp, we will explore music through various elements of nature. From the four seasons and weather to animal communication and plant waves, we will discover the sounds and concepts of music that is present in the natural world around us. We will examine nature’s influence on music through composers, instrumental timbres, and modern technology used to create music with elements of nature. From Vivaldi’s Four Seasons to experimental sound synthesis through plant waves and electrodes, students will experience music across a spectrum of genres. Not only will students get to hear examples of these types of music, but we will also test instruments available at Opus11 to experiment and create an interpretation of nature in music. Come and experience all that nature and music have to offer! 

Rock Band – Classic Rock

For this first week of Rock Camp, we will delve into the world of classic rock. With guitars, keyboards, drums, and vocals; students will learn one to two classic rock hits popular during mid to late twentieth century. Students will have the opportunity to learn and experience the aspects of performance as an ensemble. Through these classic hits, students will learn and practice active listening skills, the musical alphabet, counting, and maintaining steady rhythm. Come and experience the best of what classic rock has to offer!  

Rock Band – Modern Rock

July 24-28
9:00am – 2:30pm

In the last week of Rock Camp, we will experience the best of modern rock music starting around the turn of the twenty first century. With guitars, keyboards, drums, and vocals; students will learn one to two modern rock hits popular during the end of the twentieth century to present. Students will have the opportunity to learn and experience the aspects of performance as an ensemble. Through these modern rock staples, students will learn and practice active listening skills, the musical alphabet, counting, and maintaining steady rhythm. Come rock out to these modern rock hits!
